UPDATE: The Dragons have confirmed the arrival of star forward Josh McGuire, with the 31-year-old set to make his debut in the Red V in Sunday's clash with the Warriors.

As first reported by Wide World of Sports, McGuire, who had recently ruffled some feathers at the Cowboys, was eager for a fresh start and his old coach Anthony Griffin was more than happy to accommodate him.

The player-coach reunion is the second such deal made by the Dragons this year, with Andrew McCullough also brought to the club by Griffin. With Ben Hunt and Corey Norman already at the Dragons it is starting to feel like a second incarnation of Griffin's Broncos side that was built a decade ago and laid the foundation for the 2015 side that Wayne Bennett coached to the grand final.

McGuire switched from the Broncos to the Cowboys after the 2018 season but he was never a comfortable fit in North Queensland, with his form dipping to the point that he lost his place in the Queensland and Kangaroos teams.

His deal at the Dragons runs until the end of next season, with his tough, physical brand of football a good fit for the forward pack he is joining, which has propelled the Wollongong-based outfit to fourth on the ladder after five games on the back of a game plan designed to batter opponents into submission.

Dragons general manager of football Ben Haran welcomed McGuire's signing.

"The club has made no secret of its desire to sign an experienced forward for our current campaign and Josh certainly fits this bill," Dragons general manager of football Ben Haran said.

"Josh's standing in the game, both at NRL and representative level, cannot be denied and he will certainly add plenty to our current squad.

"We're looking forward to seeing Josh hit the ground running at the Dragons upon his arrival to training later this week."
