Newcastle boss Steve Bruce has insisted he ‘won’t walk away’ from Newcastle as they slumped to another defeat against Sheff Utd.

Billy Sharp’s 73rd-minute penalty gave Sheff Utd the victory at Bramall Lane.

Newcastle fans will likely be concerned by the team’s poor performance in the defeat.

They offered little going forward against a team which had previously not won in six months in the Premier League.

Despite their poor showing, Bruce is adamant he will remain in charge of Newcastle. Speaking after the match, he said: “I will never walk away from a challenge. I understand that especially the first half we were not good enough and I take responsibility for that.

“I’ve tried to change it in attack because we haven’t scored. In hindsight, I needed to change at half-time but the red card stopped it.

“We didn’t give ourselves a chance going forward and we didn’t create. The first half was arguably as bad as we’ve played in a long time

“We needed half-time to change things around but the sending off meant we were hamstrung. It was disappointing.

“When you are in the bottom half you can end up having a run like this. We had a decent start. We knew the festive period would be difficult and tonight would be.”

Bruce was also angry about the VAR decisions during the match. He went on to say: “I’ve got no issues with the red card – we can’t argue with that and you can’t argue with how poor we are in the first half.

“But the penalty baffles me. The referee got it spot on in real time. It hit [Federico Fernandez’s] hand but it’s not intentional. It could have been a foul on him as well.

“VAR is supposed to be for clear and obvious decisions. How someone 300 miles away on a TV screen can overturn it is beyond me.

“You know when the referee goes to the screen it will be a penalty. It’s pathetic.”
