Marco Grujic has suggested that he was left “confused” at Liverpool because of his lack of game time.
In January 2016, the midfielder joined Liverpool for around £5m from Red Star Belgrade. They fended off interest from the likes of Inter Milan and Juventus to sign him.
He was immediately loaned back to the Serbian outfit before he linked up with the Liverpool squad ahead of the 2016/17 campaign.
Grujic has only managed to make 16 first-team appearances for Jurgen Klopp’s side since then. Eight of these outings have come for the Reds in the Premier League.
In recent years he has had spells on loan with Cardiff City and Hertha Berlin. In October 2020, he joined Porto on a season-long loan deal.
Grujic told Serbian outlet Kurir, as cited by the Daily Star, that he is surprised that he has not been given more chance to shine at Liverpool:
“In every conversation, be it Klopp or one of the directors, they always remind me that I am a player of great potential.
“But when I get into the system I don’t get a chance. It confuses me a little.
“I told the people from Liverpool that I wanted to play. Hertha, where I spent two beautiful years, was an option, as were some other Bundesliga sides, [but] Porto happened.
“They sold Danilo to PSG and needed a player with my characteristics. They wanted me and it was all done in a few hours.
“For me, Porto is a great option, a team fighting for the title and playing in the Champions League, a new experience.
“After two years in the Bundesliga, I returned to England more mature.
“But when Thiago came from Bayern, I estimated that there would not be much space for me.
“I didn’t want to gamble. I see now that there are a lot of injured players at Anfield, it is certain that I would get a chance, but I could not have foreseen that.”
