Roy Hodgson gave an honest assessment of Crystal Palace’s sluggish display as his side lost 2-0 at Leeds on Monday night.

The home side gained a deserved victory over a poor Palace team to move into the top half of the Premier League table.

Leeds only needed three minutes before they went ahead as Jack Harrison’s strike from the edge of the penalty area took a big deflection off Gary Cahill and flew past Vicente Guaita.

Patrick Bamford, Raphinha and Pascal Struijk all had opportunities to double Leeds’ advantage in the first half.

But Bamford killed the game off early in the second half with a tap-in for his 100th goal in club football after Guaita had parried Raphinha’s fierce strike.

Speaking after the match, Hodgson told BBC Sport: “Everything depends upon the opposition as well and we met a good team. I’m disappointed in the way we started each half. It is of course going to put you on the backfoot against any team, not least one of Leeds’ quality.

Mistakes cost Palace

“It’s what you don’t want. You try to encourage your players not to make mistakes in those moments to give your opposition a head start if you like. I don’t think we created enough to get back into the game and we had to work really hard to make sure they didn’t score more goals.

“I didn’t think our passing was as good today. The pitch was difficult for both teams which doesn’t help when you’re the team chasing the game and trying to get back into it. They are maybe more used to it.

“It’s not the reason we lost the game but it may have affected the way we were able to pass the ball which I didn’t think we did well enough.”
