Tottenham midfielder Tanguy Ndombele has admitted to holding a conversation with fellow Frenchman Paul Pogba over the issues that can arise from working under Jose Mourinho.

Ndombele, 24, became Tottenham’s club record signing in a deal worth an initial £55.45m in 2019.

Following the dismissal of ex-boss Mauricio Pochettino, Mourinho took the reins. Initially, things did not fair well for Ndombele.

The midfielder famously became the target of scorn for the Portuguese after being hooked at half-time during a match with Burnley one year ago.

Now, speaking to Football London (via Sky Sports), Ndombele has revealed he spoke with French international teammate Pogba – himself a player who also experienced turbulence under Mourinho during his tenure at Old Trafford.

“We spoke, we spoke about that but really quickly,” explained Ndombele. “It wasn’t like he gave me any advice because our situations were completely different.

“It’s true he worked with Mourinho but my own experiences weren’t the same and each relationship has its own characteristics.”

Ndombele has revitalised his Tottenham career this season after revealing what Mourinho psychological trick made a big impact. However, recent reports detailed how close he came to leaving amid personal turmoil with the club.

The player has now expanded further on the situation and admitted that he did indeed “want to leave.”

Ndombele opens up on aborted exit

“To be perfectly honest with you I don’t know how close I was to leaving,” he added. “What I know is that I did want to leave. I spoke about this with people at the club and particularly with the chairman [Daniel Levy].

“The chairman said he didn’t want me to leave and definitely that’s something that really helped. The hardest moments are in the past and I’ve moved forward and things are much better for me and the team and it’s all behind us.

“I wouldn’t really say that I made errors, or particular errors. I think everybody has to take their own responsibility for what goes on in a season and there were things that went on at the club that people know about and things that went on at the club that people don’t know about.

“I’m able now to look back and see what were the aspects of my contribution that I needed to work on and what’s great now is that everything’s moving in the right direction for the team, for the club and for everyone and that’s really satisfying.

“Without a doubt it’s made me stronger mentally. It’s made me and improved me as an athlete, what happened last season, because I wasn’t playing a lot. I was getting injured a lot, which I’m not used to and we were going through the pandemic and times like this you can only grow stronger.”
